How You Can Prepare for Your Future Today

How often do you dream about, plan, or prepare for the future? If you don’t, why not?

Because the future is coming whether you do anything to prepare for it or not. One day, you will be five years older than you are now. One day, you won’t have any more children living in your home. One day, you’ll have more time than you’ll know what to do with.

We always hear about living in the present, and embracing the moment; and I couldn’t agree more with that statement.

The picture shows a woman taking the time to improve herself, by reading a book.

But we also need to embrace the future.

We need to be proactive; planning and preparing; helping to steer the course so to speak, because if you don’t, it might head in an unintended direction.

So, what moves can we make to embrace the future?

We can set goals that stretch well into the future. Maybe you already have some one-year goals, or maybe even some three-year goals. But what about 10 years plus? Take some time to sit and think about what you want to be doing, accomplishing, and experiencing ten or more years from now, and set some goals.

Get excited about the future. Sometimes when you’re weighed down by challenges or everyday responsibilities, it’s hard to get excited about tomorrow, let alone twenty years from now. But get excited! Remember, hard seasons don’t last for a lifetime. Busy seasons don’t last for a lifetime. Seasons are constantly changing; so good, peaceful, restful times will roll around again. Some will be in your near future, and some will be in your far future. Either way, get excited!

Instead of beating yourself up for mistakes and failures, see them as an area you can improve upon, for the good of your future. Choosing to allow every opportunity to be a learning experience, not only benefits you now, but it benefits your future. Your learning now what not to do, and what doesn’t work; which will enable you to make wiser choices in the future.

Take every opportunity, to improve yourself. I am a firm believer, that we should be constant learners. Learning doesn’t end when you graduate from school. We should always be growing in knowledge, wisdom, and character. This comes through learning from others, reading, taking classes, listening to podcasts, and being willing to listen to constructive criticism that can benefit our character.

Be willing to let go of the past. Sadly, most of us have some kind of hurt or pain in our past. Part of embracing the future, is dealing with those things so that you can leave them in the past. Deal with the things that dredge up anger, bitterness, unforgiveness, guilt, shame and revenge within you. You do not want to carry that toxicity into your future.

Speak positively about your future. It’s amazing how many people I talk to that are dreading one thing or another in their future. They dread getting older, having an empty nest, getting sick in their old age; they dread all of these things that haven’t happened, and may never happen. That’s absolutely no way to live!

It’s time to start thinking about your future. Yes, it will include hardships and challenges, but with some planning and preparation, it can also be filled with a lot of good; giving you so much to look forward to!

  1. Planning for the future is so important for me and my husband. We have a financial plan in place for unexpected events. We also make sure we plan to do things that we both enjoy such as traveling or watching a movie to break up the monotony of everyday life.

  2. Great ideas for planning for the future! It’s hard to plan for something if you don’t have a goal for the future, once you decide on what you want your future to look like, then time to make it happen! 🙂

  3. I am learning to look more into the future now and leaving the past behind. Making plans for the future helping me to move forward. It doesn’t matter if I have the means to achieve it or not. It helps one to remain positive. Great post.

  4. Thank you for a wonderful read!
I really enjoy your way of writing!
I’d just like to add my point of view: I agree with everything you said, however I also believe the future is now. I am a SAHM and I try to work from home, which already makes me feel like I have a purpose – also, there are plenty of ways to educate yourself while being a sahm, like podcasts, courses, webinars, audio books etc.
My baby is 11 months old and I really think he’s not been the reason I haven’t improved enough 😀

    1. Hi! Thank you so much for your kind words!😊. You are certainly right, the future is now…but the future also stretches further than just today, or just this moment; the future is also 10 to 20 years from now. So as important as it is to focus on today, it certainly doesn’t hurt to put some time and thought into the days and years further down the line. And I couldn’t agree more, about all the ways you suggest a SAHM can educate herself! As for your precious baby, or anyone else’s child, no, they are never the reason why we haven’t improved at some thing or achieved some thing. But sometimes the overwhelming responsibilities moms face, can be part of the reason. Being a mom is a lot of work, and it’s hard work; but it’s still imperative that we make time for ourselves and our goals😊

      1. I completely agree with everything you’ve said – and thank you for such a deep reply! 🙂 All I meant was, it’s always possible to find at least bits of time and try to do something with it to feel like we’re alive, and growing, as individuals 🙂

  5. This post is really helpful. Setting up for goals for the future is good especially we’re getting older. Our children will grow old and have their own families.
