New You

When Your Life Is Far from Where You Desire It to Be

Life moves so fast, doesn’t it? One minute your young and enjoying the beauty and wonder of your youth, and then suddenly you look up to find years and years have passed; only nothing looks as beautiful as it once did. And you can’t help but wonder, “how did I get here?”

What do you do when your life is far from where you desire it to be?

Because the truth is, so many moms find themselves at this exact point, for many different reasons.

Some wish they wouldn’t have had kids so young. They wish they would have taken some time to do the adventurous things they always wanted to do. Some regret the person they had kids with. They wish they would have chosen a more suitable partner for themselves, or a more suitable father for their children. Others regret what they failed to achieve or accomplish. They wish they would have gone to college, gotten a degree, and built the career they once desired for themselves. And sadly, some regret ever having children at all. And wish they could go back and choose differently.

Where do you fall mom?

To show the saddness moms deal with when their life is far from where they desire it to be.

Wherever you find yourself, it’s time to take action so you can get back to living a life you actually enjoy.

So often, we mistakenly believe that we can’t be happy until our circumstances line up just the way we want them. Or, until the people around us change to be the way we want them.

But can I tell you that your happiness will always be more dependent upon your internal attitude and mindset, rather than your external circumstances.

Now of course, sometimes our external circumstances are so horrific and defeating, that they must be dealt with drastically and swiftly. Because if you are in any type of danger, your internal attitude and mindset will never be as healthy as it should be.

But for the less extreme cases, here are some effective actions you can take, to begin to turn your life around:

Write down 5 things you are thankful for at the start of each day. Writing down 5 things you are thankful for, as early as you can each day, will help get your mind and attitude set in positive mode, before negativity ever gets a chance to creep in.

Keep your affirmations handy, and say them out loud as often as you need to. Affirmations are also a great way to keep your mind and attitude flowing in a positive direction. It’s great if you can say them at the start of the day as well; but keep in mind that they don’t have to be a one-time thing. Pull them out any time you’re feeling low, and in need of some positivity.

Take care of yourself physically and nutritionally. As a person who has struggled greatly in this area, I can tell you that I feel much better when I am making positive choices for my health. But when I am inactive and fueling my body with sugar and unhealthy carbs, I feel horrible. There are two common sayings that certainly ring true in my life. The first one is, “you are what you eat.” When I eat poorly, I look and feel poorly, but when I eat wisely, I experience the opposite. The second saying is, “when you look your best, you feel your best.” I know that sounds superficial, but honestly, when I’m properly caring for my body, skin, and hair, I truly feel my best.

Do something you love, EVERY. SINGLE. DAY! That may seem like a tall order. Especially since we’re so used to pouring time into others, rather than ourselves. But those things you love to do, are a part of who you are. Who is it benefiting, to deny yourself the things that bring you joy and passion? Start with 15 minutes if you have to, and work your way up from there.

To promote the importance of getting plugged into a community, when you are unhappy with your life and desire to change it.

Find a community to connect with. Everyone needs community. Getting planted in a community is a great way to meet new people and make new friends. Meeting the right friends can do wonders for lighting up your life. And there are so many communities you can join; churches, mom groups, book clubs (often found at local libraries), a fitness class, the PTA, etc.

Set and accomplish one new goal each month. Set and accomplish goals that push your life forward, into the direction you desire to go. You can start with small, easily attainable goals; and then build from there. The point is to just start accomplishing. Because when we accomplish goals, big or small, we prove to ourselves that we can achieve and accomplish new things. This serves as a great motivator and encourages us to pursue even more goals.

As you can see, there are a few steps you can take, to begin to pivot your life in the direction you desire to go. Your circumstances may not be the best, and you may have some regrets about choices you have made; but you don’t have to settle where you are. You can take the life you currently have, and turn it into the one you desire to have.

  1. Beautiful and very well said. Having a positive mindset that you can change your circumstances is key to turning things around in one’s life. It takes action, though. And, I appreciate how you are encouraging others to make realistic moves to make great things happen. Nourishing the mind, body, spirit, and soul is key. Then, being consistent in actively participating in those activities that will get you closer to the goals you seek to accomplish is crucial. Thank you for giving us practical things we can do daily to experience our best lives.

  2. Unfortunately most of the time in life we make choices dictated by the razocigno which however take us far from our desires. We should stop, think and realize!

  3. This is fantastic advice, and you make some great points! My mother though dying from cancer still made it a point to always remind my siblings and I that happiness was always a choice. No matter what we might face in life we might not be able to choose our circumstances, but we could at least choose how we reacted to them and that was more important.

  4. Such a brilliant post! Thanks for putting all that together. It’s something we all know can help lift us up yet we don’t do it. I know I don’t always manage to 😉

  5. I think one of the hardest things to overcome is getting over the “life we thought we’d have”. That is a sure-fire way to destroy your happiness. Social media doesn’t help the process either. I have to say that when I moved to a different country, I essentially started over. I was working jobs I thought I’d never have to work again. I saw my peers and friends back home thriving and wondered if I made the correct choice. But once I stopped comparing myself, I realised just how incredible and amazing my life is. It’s not the path I would have ever imagined but it has allowed for so many more opportunities!

    1. Yes, nothing steals your peace, joy, or contentment, quite like comparison! Once I stopped comparing myself to others, I was able to see the good and positive in my life as well. I’m so glad to hear that the path you ended up on, has turned out well for you😊

  6. Community is so important to me! I feel much better if I feel like I am being heard and understood. Not sure I’d have made it through the early years of motherhood without my tribe.

  7. I agree: happy mom means happy family, it is important to put yourself first – it’s hard to really get it but it’s better for everyone

  8. I love this. I think people in general (moms and non-moms) fall into the trap of believing that they have to reach some specific goal or dream in order to achieve happiness. However, if we’re always looking at the ‘someday’, we’re going to miss out on all the great things that surround us today. I’m not saying not to set goals and run for them, but we need to find a balance between recognizing the beauty in the ‘now’ while also making an effort to better ourselves a little each day 🙂

  10. This is a very interesting and inspiring article. As a mum, you have to be mentally and physically fit to be able to look after others, therefore it’s paramount that mothers should take very good care of themselves.
